From September 1–5, 2003, two of St. Petersburg's largest museums — the State Hermitage Museum and the State Russian Museum — hosted the CIDOC/ADIT 2003 International Conference "World Cultural Heritage: Unity through Mutual Understanding." The list of participants included 135 representatives from Russia and abroad, including Europe, Australia, America, and Japan. The conference discussed a wide range of issues equally relevant to both the Russian and international museum communities: documents and standards, databases and data banks, the internet, and technical and technological issues. Meetings of CIDOC Working Groups were held, and master classes were held for conference participants. The conference was held with the financial support of the Russian Ministry of Culture.
With the development of information technology, CIDOC has become the largest, most dynamic, and significant committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), which, in turn, represents one of UNESCO's most important activities. The committee brings together approximately 1,000 specialists. CIDOC represents approximately 100 countries from all five continents. The CIDOC conference, held in the year of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, was held in Russia for the first time.
